Summer is here, and it's the perfect time to get outside and eat some delicious food. Mexican food and summertime go together like tacos and tequila, so today, we are exploring one of our favorite foods that is perfect for summer: guacamole! If you love this cool, creamy veggie dip as much as we do, then stay tuned. We’ve got the scoop on guacamole!
Known as “ahuacate” in Spanish, avocados have been cultivated and eaten in Mexico, Central America, and South America for a long time. In fact, evidence has been found dating their consumption as far back as 500 BCE. The Aztecs invented guacamole before the 16th century, as they relied on avocados as a large source of nutrition in their diets. When the Spaniards arrived in the New World, they were introduced to a delicious sauce called "ahuacamolli," with “molli” meaning “sauce.” This was the first introduction the rest of the world had to guacamole.
Avocados have been through several name changes throughout history. In the early 1900s, they were called alligator pears because of the bumpy exterior skin. Also known as calavo, butter pear, and avocado pear, it took a while before the name avocado stuck. Today, there are over 450 varieties of avocado grown around the world. The Hass avocado is most popular however, and ideal for making guacamole. Grown in Mexico and California, it is named after postal worker Rudolph Hass, who patented the cultivar in 1935.
Avocados are a great healthy choice, so pat yourself on the back the next time you decide to order chips and guacamole at your favorite Mexican restaurant. They're packed with nutrients like fiber, vitamin B, vitamin k, vitamin e, potassium, monounsaturated fat, and other nutritious vitamins and minerals. Add fresh cut tomatoes, crispy onion, and fragrant cilantro, and it's a delicious all-vegetable dip you can enjoy guilt-free.
There have been a few guacamole world records in the last few years. In 2019, the World Avocado Organization certified a world record in Mexico for the largest serving of guacamole. It was made from 8,800 sliced avocados, 1,000 lbs of whole avocados, 700 diced tomatoes, 120 red onions, 20 gallons of lime juice, and a whole lot more. It weighed a whopping 9,090 pounds and took hundreds of people to prepare. Also in 2019, the Poking family in Hawaii grew the largest avocado, weighing in at 5.6lbs. After the official weigh-in with Guinness World Records the family turned it into guacamole of course, where the single avocado made enough to feed 20 people!
