Bottoms Up! Fun Facts about Tequila

Facts about Tequila

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, more! You could say we have a thing for tequila. It may have a reputation for being the cause of many bad decisions, but it's also the key ingredient in some of our best-loved beverages. From our Top Shelf margarita to our Strawberry Infused Mojito, and all the TCT Margaritas in between, good tequila is the backbone to every great drink. And we know a thing or two about good tequila!

Tequila is made from the agave plant.

Tequila is made from the sap that comes from the heart of the blue agave, a plant native to Mexico. While it may look like a cactus, agave is a desert grower that's more closely related to lilies.

Tequila and Mezcal are different liquors.

According to Mexican law, tequila can only be tequila if it is made from at least 51% blue agave. Mezcal is a similar distilled beverage that can be made from any of the hundreds of different agave varieties.

To be tequila, it must be made in Mexico.

Today, tequila is still made by hand in a long, painstaking process. To be considered tequila, it must be produced in Mexico, in one of five specific regions where agave is hand-selected for harvest and manually processed.

You won’t find worms in tequila.

For the most part, you're not going to be finding any worms in true tequila. You may find one in a bottle of Mezcal, though. Both spirits are made from agave, but an Agave Snout Weevil, or the caterpillar of the Hypopta Agavis Moth, used to be included in bottles of Mezcal to differentiate it from true tequila. If you’re looking to try a worm-in tequila, stop by for a shot of Monte Alban!

Tequila is not actually meant to be a shot.

Quality tequila is not intended for shots with a chaser of lime and salt. Traditionally, it’s meant to be sipped and savored, much like a fine Scotch, so you can experience the unique notes and flavors that come from distillation and aging.

There are three main categories of tequila.

You'll find them all at The Corner Taqueria:

Blanco: clear, transparent, unaged spirits bottled within 2 months of distillation.

Reposado: golden in color, aged between 2 to 12 months in wooden barrels.

Anejo: brown in color, aged between 1 to 3 years in small oak barrels for an intense, oaky flavor.
